Teamwork
by Brian Kelley

On Father’s Day we compete in the 5 mile road race

I feel the sun and breeze on my face

My team’s fast feet set the pace

To be a contender for this exciting race

Training with Ryan and Paul after school

I think that’s cool

Meet at the flagpole at quarter of ten

That’s where we’ll be, see you then

Remember your hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen

Meet at the flagpole in the middle of the green

We head to the start and get ready to go

My team knows I hate to go slow

Mr. Mac, Michelle, and Kath

They push me fast and clear the path

My dad watches us from the Shoreline Market

He gets his coffee and newspaper and there he will park it

When I come around the curve he shouts, Go CHIZ

I know right away who that voice is!

Billy says excuse us, jogger with wheels coming through

Jeanne and Billy are fast as the wind, this is true

Finally we break free of the large running crowd

People cheering near the water are excited and loud

I can smell the sea, the tide is low

Someone else shouts, Go Brian Go!

As we approach the finish line

Someone shouted out my name and our time

The spectators, runners and all will agree

Teamwork is more than something you can see!

This poem was an English assignment at Branford High School, where Brian attends daily.  Using an auditory word processing program on the computer, Brian selects his topic and word or phrase choices by activating a switch with his chin.

Brian chose to dedicate this poem to his running friends and his good friends of “Race Productions,” who support him and the Myelin Project.
